Why CEOs need to have a voice in 2025

By Maria Georgiou, PR Executive at Purpose Communications

The faceless corporation is no longer viable in today’s business landscape. In an era of transparency and rapid communication, silence is no longer a neutral stance; it’s a liability. Trust, the foundation of all meaningful business relationships, depends increasingly on human connection. And that connection is most substantial when people hear directly from the leaders shaping the companies they engage with.

For CEOs, developing a distinct and credible voice is no longer optional; it’s essential. Customers, employees, and investors now expect to hear directly from leadership. They want to understand the values behind the company, the thinking that drives decisions, and the direction the organization is heading.

In 2025, the CEOs who step forward, embrace visibility, demonstrate thought leadership, and speak with authenticity will strengthen trust, enhance their company’s reputation, and secure a lasting competitive advantage. Those who remain silent risk being defined by others—or worse, overlooked altogether.

Why visibility is now a leadership imperative

CEOs could afford to stay behind the scenes for decades, emerging only for key financial announcements, media interviews, or high-profile events. But today, leadership has changed. Transparency is no longer optional; stakeholders increasingly expect CEOs to be vocal, engaged, and accessible.

This shift is driven by one fundamental factor: trust. Studies consistently confirm that trust is a critical driver of consumer behavior. According to recent research, 81% of consumers say they must trust a brand before supporting it, while 80% prefer brands that align with their personal values.

In this context, a CEO’s voice has become a powerful tool for building — or losing — trust. While marketing campaigns and corporate messaging remain essential, nothing is as effective as hearing directly from the person at the top. A CEO’s words carry weight, reinforcing the company’s purpose, values, and vision.

This visibility also offers a distinct competitive advantage. CEOs who actively participate in conversations about their industry become thought leaders — individuals whose insights shape public perception, drive conversations, and build credibility for themselves and their organization.

When CEOs embrace this role, they promote their company and demonstrate leadership in action. By addressing trends, sharing insights, or responding to societal issues, they become a trusted source of information and guidance — a role that resonates deeply with today’s consumers, employees, and investors.

Thought Leadership: More than just content

For some CEOs, the term ‘thought leadership’ may sound like corporate jargon. In reality, it’s a strategic tool that drives influence and trust. Thought leadership is about sharing meaningful insights, not promoting oneself but informing, educating, and inspiring.

Effective thought leadership positions CEOs as credible authorities, individuals who simplify complexity, challenge conventional thinking, and offer guidance in uncertain times. CEOs who embrace this role add value by helping stakeholders make better decisions, understand emerging trends, and anticipate future developments.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek exemplifies this approach. By openly discussing Spotify’s strategic direction, the role of artificial intelligence in music, and the industry's evolving landscape, Ek has positioned himself as a leading voice in the global audio market. His insights are not self-serving; they provide value to artists, industry players, and consumers alike. By being transparent about Spotify’s challenges and ambitions, Ek has earned trust while reinforcing his company’s position as an industry pioneer.

Crucially, thought leadership demands consistency. CEOs who communicate only in moments of success risk appearing opportunistic. Those who consistently contribute insights, whether through opinion pieces, social media commentary, or industry events, cultivate deeper trust and establish themselves as reliable sources of information.

Authenticity: The foundation of influence

Visibility alone is not enough. Authenticity is what makes a CEO’s voice genuinely impactful. Today’s audiences are highly attuned to insincere messaging. Overly scripted statements, excessive self-promotion, or corporate jargon can easily undermine a CEO’s credibility.

Instead, authenticity requires openness, clarity, and a willingness to show vulnerability when appropriate. CEOs who share their perspectives — whether on leadership challenges, industry developments, or lessons learned — invite their audience to connect with them as individuals, not just corporate figures.

This authenticity becomes especially important during periods of uncertainty or crisis. In challenging moments, stakeholders seek reassurance from leadership. A CEO who steps forward acknowledges concerns and outlines a clear path forward can restore confidence and provide much-needed stability. Conversely, CEOs who retreat into silence risk creating a vacuum of speculation and doubt.

Authenticity does not require CEOs to reveal every internal decision or sensitive detail. Instead, it’s about communicating sincerely, delivering messages that align with the company’s values while remaining transparent about what lies ahead.

Inspiring employees and shaping culture

A CEO’s voice isn’t just a powerful tool for external communication; it plays a pivotal role in engaging employees and strengthening internal culture.  Today’s workforce expects visible but actively engaged leadership. Employees want to feel connected to their CEO’s vision, values, and strategic priorities. CEOs who communicate openly, celebrate achievements, address concerns, and recognize employee contributions foster a stronger sense of purpose within their teams.

This engagement has a direct impact on morale, productivity, and retention. Employees who feel informed and valued are far more likely to stay committed to the organization’s goals.

For Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, generations that emphasize authenticity and purpose, a visible and relatable CEO can profoundly impact workplace culture. By embracing communication as a leadership tool, CEOs can inspire loyalty and drive positive change from within.

Crisis Communication: Leadership’s defining moment

In times of crisis, a CEO’s voice becomes indispensable. Whether facing economic uncertainty, reputational challenges, or industry disruption, stakeholders turn to leadership for clarity, reassurance, and guidance.

CEOs who address these moments directly, acknowledging concerns, outlining solutions, and demonstrating accountability reinforce confidence in their leadership. In contrast, CEOs who remain silent risk creating uncertainty and allowing others to shape the narrative.

Effective crisis communication is not about having all the answers immediately. Instead, it’s about showing composure, empathy, and a commitment to resolving the issue. A well-communicated message can stabilize a problematic situation, restoring trust and demonstrating resilience.

Why silence is no longer an option

In 2025, CEOs who choose to remain silent risk falling behind. In today’s digital world, conversations about your company, positive or negative, will unfold regardless of whether leadership participates. Without a CEO’s voice shaping the narrative, the company’s story is left to competitors, critics, or speculation.

CEOs gain control over their narrative by actively engaging with stakeholders, reinforcing their organization’s credibility and direction. Digital platforms such as LinkedIn, X, and industry-specific media channels provide CEOs with direct access to their audiences — allowing them to connect authentically in real time.

This isn’t about self-promotion; it’s about leadership. CEOs who embrace communication as a strategic tool will inspire greater trust, strengthen relationships, and position their companies for sustained success.
